Hydrated Lime for Sugar Mills — Juice Clarification & Defecation
IS 712 certified Ca(OH)₂ in Industrial & Premium grades — trusted by sugar mills across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and pan-India for consistent juice clarification and maximum sugar recovery.
Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) is an essential process chemical in every sugar mill in India. It is used in the defecation process — the first and most critical step in raw cane juice clarification — where lime raises the pH of the juice to precipitate impurities before evaporation and crystallisation.
The quality of hydrated lime used in a sugar mill directly affects sugar recovery rates. Inconsistent purity, high moisture content, or poor fineness leads to incomplete clarification, higher colour in the juice, increased lime consumption, and ultimately lower sugar yields. Choosing a reliable, quality-consistent hydrated lime manufacturer is a direct investment in your mill's profitability.
How Hydrated Lime Is Used in Sugar Processing
Defecation (Juice Clarification)
In the defecation process, hydrated lime is added to raw cane juice to raise its pH to approximately 7.0–7.2. At this pH, proteins, waxes, gums, and colour bodies coagulate and precipitate as calcium salts. The clarified juice (clear juice) is separated from the mud (filter cake) in clarifiers and vacuum filters. The quality of this clarification step determines the colour and purity of the final sugar.
Industrial Grade (80–85%) or Premium Grade (88–92%)
Sulphitation Process
In the sulphitation process (used for producing white/refined sugar), hydrated lime and sulphur dioxide (SO₂) are used together. Lime is added first to raise pH, followed by SO₂ to bleach the juice and reduce colour. The lime quality — particularly its purity and fineness — determines the efficiency of this combined treatment.
Premium Grade (88–92%)
Carbonatation Process
In the carbonatation process (used in refined sugar production), excess lime is added to the juice, followed by CO₂ gas to precipitate calcium carbonate. The CaCO₃ acts as a filter aid, adsorbing colour bodies and impurities. This process requires high-purity hydrated lime to ensure complete precipitation and effective colour removal.
Premium Grade (88–92%) or Ultra Grade (93–95%)
Juice pH Control
Throughout the evaporation and crystallisation stages, pH control is critical to prevent sucrose inversion (breakdown of sucrose into glucose and fructose). Hydrated lime is used to maintain the correct pH range, protecting sugar yield and quality.
Industrial Grade (80–85%)
Press Mud & Effluent Treatment
Hydrated lime is used in the treatment of press mud (filter cake) and sugar mill effluent. Lime stabilises the press mud for use as organic fertiliser and treats the high-BOD effluent from the mill to meet CPCB discharge standards.

Why Sugar Mills Choose Shree Ram Lime
Consistent Purity — Batch After Batch
Sugar mills cannot afford inconsistent lime quality. Our in-house laboratory tests every batch before dispatch. Batch-wise test reports available with every shipment.
Low Moisture Content
Moisture content controlled below 2% (IS 712 requirement). Dry, free-flowing lime ensures accurate dosing and prevents clumping in lime preparation systems.
Fine Particle Size
IS 712 fineness compliance ensures fast dissolution in lime preparation tanks and complete reaction in the defecation process — reducing lime consumption and improving clarification efficiency.
Seasonal Supply Planning
Sugar mills operate seasonally (October–April crushing season). We plan supply schedules to ensure uninterrupted lime availability throughout your crushing season.
IS 712 Certified
IS 712 test certificates provided with every shipment. Supports your quality documentation and audit requirements.
