Why Steel Plants Require High-Reactivity Quick Lime
Quick lime (calcium oxide, CaO) is an essential raw material in steel manufacturing. It is used in Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF), Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), and ladle metallurgy for desulphurisation, slag formation, and refining of hot metal and steel. The high temperatures inside steel furnaces (1,400–1,600°C) demand a lime with high reactivity and high CaO content.
Unlike hydrated lime, quick lime is used directly in steel plants because its high reactivity at furnace temperatures makes it more effective than pre-hydrated lime. The CaO reacts rapidly with sulphur, phosphorus, and other impurities to form slag, which is separated from the steel melt. Reactivity — measured as t60 (time to reach 60°C in a standard slaking test) — is the critical quality parameter for steel plant lime.
