Hydrated Lime for Road Construction & Soil Stabilisation in India
IS 712 certified Ca(OH)₂ meeting NHAI and IRC specifications — trusted by road contractors and PWD projects across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and pan-India.
Why Hydrated Lime Is Essential for Road Construction in India
Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) is a critical material in road construction and soil stabilisation across India. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), state Public Works Departments (PWDs), and IRC specifications all recognise hydrated lime as the standard material for improving weak subgrade soils and building durable road bases.
When mixed into clay-rich subgrade soils, hydrated lime triggers two reactions: an immediate ion exchange that reduces plasticity and improves workability, followed by a long-term pozzolanic reaction that permanently strengthens the soil. The result is a stable, load-bearing subgrade that resists moisture damage and reduces pavement failures — extending road life significantly.
Road Construction Applications of Hydrated Lime
Subgrade Soil Stabilisation
Hydrated lime is mixed into weak, clay-rich subgrade soils to improve their load-bearing capacity before laying the road base. Lime reacts with clay minerals (ion exchange + pozzolanic reaction) to permanently increase CBR (California Bearing Ratio) values, reduce plasticity index, and improve compaction characteristics. NHAI and IRC specifications require IS 712 certified hydrated lime for this application.
Standard Grade (70–75%) or Industrial Grade (80–85%)
Sub-base & Base Course Stabilisation
Lime-treated sub-base layers provide a stable platform for bituminous or concrete pavement layers. Lime stabilisation reduces moisture susceptibility, prevents frost heave, and improves the long-term structural performance of the road. Used extensively in NHAI four-laning and expressway projects.
Industrial Grade (80–85%)
Lime-Fly Ash (LFA) Stabilisation
Hydrated lime combined with fly ash (from thermal power plants) creates a highly effective stabilising mixture for weak soils. The lime activates the pozzolanic properties of fly ash, producing a cementitious material that significantly improves soil strength. This LFA stabilisation method is approved by IRC and widely used in road projects near thermal power stations.
Industrial Grade (80–85%)
Embankment Construction
For road embankments built on soft, expansive, or waterlogged soils, hydrated lime treatment of the fill material improves compaction, reduces settlement, and prevents embankment failure. Lime-treated embankments are more stable and require less maintenance over the road's service life.
Standard Grade (70–75%)
Pavement Recycling (Cold In-Place Recycling)
In road rehabilitation projects, hydrated lime is used in cold in-place recycling (CIR) to stabilise the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material. Lime improves the binding properties of the recycled material, enabling cost-effective road rehabilitation without full reconstruction.
