Lime as a Base Chemical for Indian Industry

Lime — both hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) and quick lime (calcium oxide, CaO) — is a foundational raw material in the Indian chemical industry. It is used as a base, a precipitating agent, a neutralising agent, and a reactant in the manufacture of dozens of industrial and specialty chemicals.

The chemical industry demands consistent purity, controlled particle size, and reliable supply — because lime quality directly affects the yield, purity, and consistency of the downstream chemical product. Shree Ram Lime & Chemical supplies both hydrated lime and quick lime in multiple purity grades to chemical manufacturers across India, with batch-wise test certificates and ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management.

Chemical Industry Applications of Lime

Calcium Stearate Manufacturing

Calcium stearate — a widely used lubricant, stabiliser, and release agent in PVC, rubber, plastics, and paper — is produced by reacting stearic acid with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)₂). The purity and fineness of the hydrated lime directly affect the quality of the calcium stearate product. High-purity lime produces a whiter, purer calcium stearate with better performance in PVC and rubber applications.

Premium Grade (88–92%) or Ultra Grade (93–95%)

Bleaching Powder (Calcium Hypochlorite)

Bleaching powder is produced by reacting slaked lime (hydrated lime) with chlorine gas. The reaction produces calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)₂), the active bleaching agent. The available chlorine content of the bleaching powder depends directly on the purity of the hydrated lime used — higher Ca(OH)₂ content produces higher available chlorine.

Industrial Grade (80–85%) or Premium Grade (88–92%)

Calcium Carbide Production

Calcium carbide (CaC₂) — used for acetylene gas generation, PVC production, and as a reducing agent — is produced by reacting quick lime (CaO) with coke in an electric arc furnace at very high temperatures (2,000°C+). High-purity quick lime with low silica and alumina content is essential for maximising calcium carbide yield and quality.

High Purity Quick Lime (88–92% CaO)

Calcium Propionate & Food-Grade Chemicals

Calcium propionate — a food preservative used in bread, bakery products, and animal feed — is produced by reacting propionic acid with hydrated lime. Food-grade and feed-grade applications require high-purity hydrated lime with low heavy metal content. Ultra Grade hydrated lime is used for these sensitive applications.

Ultra Grade (93–95%)

Neutralisation & pH Control in Chemical Processes

Hydrated lime is used as a cost-effective base for neutralising acidic process streams, adjusting pH in chemical reactors, and precipitating metal salts in chemical manufacturing. Its high alkalinity (pH ~12.4 in saturated solution) and low cost make it the preferred neutralising agent for large-volume chemical processes.

Industrial Grade (80–85%) or Premium Grade (88–92%)

Calcium Chloride & Other Calcium Salts

Various calcium salts — calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, calcium acetate — are produced by reacting hydrated lime or quick lime with the corresponding acid. The purity of the lime determines the purity of the calcium salt product. High-purity lime is essential for producing pharmaceutical-grade or food-grade calcium salts.
